The Danger Zone: Why You Must Avoid the Knee Joint

The single most dangerous mistake in Tree Pose is placing the sole of the lifted foot directly against the side of the standing knee joint.

  • The human knee is a hinge joint designed strictly for flexion and extension (bending and straightening).
  • It has almost zero natural capacity to withstand lateral (sideways) pressure.
  • When you press your foot forcefully into the side of your knee, you exert lateral shear force directly onto the lateral collateral ligament (LCL) and meniscus.

3. Establish Your Drishti (Focal Point)

  • Pick an unmoving spot on the wall or floor about 4 to 6 feet in front of you.
  • Soften your gaze on that point and avoid darting your eyes around the room.

4. Keep Hips Level

A frequent compensation is letting the standing hip sag outward, tilting the pelvis. Engage the gluteus medius on the standing leg to keep both hip crests perfectly parallel to the floor.
