5 Exercises Most People Do Wrong at Home — And How AI Catches Them
In a gym, a trainer might correct your squat depth. A fellow member might notice your elbows flaring during push-ups. The mirrors, the environment, the presence of others — all of it creates a loose accountability system that home training entirely removes.
The result is that most people working out at home are building habits around incorrect movement patterns without realising it. They feel the effort, they count the reps, and they assume the work is translating into results. Often, a significant portion of it is not.

1. Squats — The Depth Problem Nobody Talks About
Squats are the most fundamental lower body exercise and the most consistently performed incorrectly at home. The most common error is not knee cave or heel rise — it is simply stopping short of full depth.
Research in exercise science consistently demonstrates that squats performed to parallel depth or below produce significantly greater quadriceps and glute activation than partial-range squats. Yet the majority of self-coached home workout practitioners stop 15 to 20 percent short of parallel on every rep, every set, without any awareness that it is happening.

Push-ups are the most performed bodyweight exercise globally, and the most misunderstood. The common assumption is that push-up errors are about elbow position or core engagement. Those matter — but the most universal and damaging error is rushing the eccentric phase.
The eccentric phase is the controlled lowering from the top position to the bottom. Exercise science is unambiguous on this: the eccentric phase produces greater muscle damage and subsequent hypertrophic adaptation than the concentric (pushing) phase. Most home workout practitioners drop to the bottom in under half a second and push up slowly — precisely the opposite of what builds the most muscle.

Lunges have the highest injury complaint rate of any beginner home workout exercise. The primary complaint is knee pain — and in the vast majority of cases, the knee pain is entirely preventable with one form correction.
The most common lunge error is allowing the front knee to travel significantly past the front toe line during the descent. When the knee travels this far forward, the compressive force on the patella and surrounding structures increases substantially, creating the anterior knee pain that causes most beginners to abandon lunges entirely.

- Torso leaning heavily forward, loading the hip flexors instead of the glutes
- Front heel rising off the floor during the descent

When glute bridges are performed with the feet too far from the body, or with insufficient hip extension at the top, the lower back compensates for the lack of glute activation and takes the majority of the load. The person feels effort in their lower back rather than their glutes — and if they already have lower back issues, the exercise makes them worse rather than better.

Lateral raises are among the most performed dumbbell exercises at home and among the most consistently performed incorrectly. The error that has the greatest impact on results — and the least visibility to the person performing the exercise — is shoulder shrugging.
When the shoulders elevate toward the ears during a lateral raise, the trapezius muscle takes over as the primary mover. The deltoids — the muscle the exercise is intended to train — are relegated to a secondary role. The practical result is that the person finishes their lateral raise sets with sore traps and underdeveloped shoulders, and cannot understand why the exercise is not producing the results they expected.

- Arms raised significantly above shoulder height — past 90 degrees
- Elbows fully locked, creating joint strain
- Body swinging to generate momentum rather than isolating the deltoids

Post-workout video review can identify these errors — but by then the set is over. Mirror training helps with some errors but is physically impractical for exercises performed on the floor, and introduces its own form problems as the person turns to look rather than maintaining position.
